Hi!
I'm Baffled! How can I configure my storage tower to see the drives as ID 8-14 (0r 9-15) instead of the current configuration of 0-6.

The tower is a 7 bay SCSI-II, series 3092 with 50 pin trays and a 68 pin cable to the pc. It is currently configured as a single bus.

Also, Can I safely disconnect the SCSI power supply load board since. I dont intend to do any hot swapping?

I have been unable to find support docs for this machine on the Compaq/HP site.

Thanks! Harrad.

Hi Harrad,
In a hotplug cage the SCSI IDs are determined by the SCSI backplane on the storage enclosure, so you're not going to be able to change the SCSI IDs. This isn't true for the really old light beige colored harddrives.
The new beige(scsi2/3) and the black(ultra2/3) drives are inside a shell(drive carrier). These drives cannot be used outside their carrier, because they have a SCSI/Power hybrid type cable which you can't find. So if you are using any one of these just don't even bother.
Now, if your'e lucky you have the really old light beige drives which can be taken out of their carriers and they are normal drives with a SCSI and a power cable. The carrier is the part that makes that drive hotpluggable. You can use jumpers to set the SCSI IDs on these types of harddrives.
I hope I understood your questions right, maybe I shed some light on the cituation you have.
Good luck.
Post more questions or suggestions if you have any, or if I got something wrong.

Thanks for the tips Sunny!
These must be the older drives, they have the ID jumpers on the back & I have used them outside this case before. Being 50 pin drives they only have 3 ID jumpers (0 1 2) which allow ID's 0-7.

The backplane does set the SCSI ID's, In this case thru a 6 pin connector that slides over the 3 ID jumper positions on the drive.

Some Compaq storage towers have a thumbwheel for setting the different configurations (split/single, 0-7/8-15) but this one doesn't.

Compaq did reply to my query as follows:

"The serial number provided (xxxxxxxxxxxx) indicates that your server is a PROLIANT EXPANSION SYSTEM. Please be informed that the SCSI Ids in the Expansion system is pre-configured or hardset, hence it is not possible to change the Ids."

I suspect I can tie a line on the tower's 68 pin I/O connector High (Low?)to fool my controller, but which one? There are 16 data lines & I'm not sure which are data and which are address.

I can't afford to blow up my 2940 card right now so I may wait to see if anyone else has tried this. I love computers, sometimes.)

Thanks for your help! Harrad
