Guys,

I would very much appriciate if someone could help me solve this problem.

I obtained a redundant Proliant 1600 400Mhz server which had NT4 installed with 2 9.1GB SCSI hard drives setup in a mirror RAID. I inserted the SmartStart ver 4.21 CDROM and erased the array in preparation to setup a striped RAID and Windows 2000.
However, now when I run the StartSmart CD I choose Assisted Integration and select the OS. It's at this point that a Configure Hardware DOS screen opens stating "Loading Plug and Play cards" which then disappears causing the machine to hang!!
To rule out a faulty CDROM I obtained a Start Smart ver 5.4 CDROM but experienced the same fault.

Any ideas?

Try running the F10 configuration utility and clear the NVRAM, then let the configuration utility run automatically, then save and exit. This will rebuild the NVRAM

Extra information which might help someone come up with the answer. When I try the F10 option and select configure the system I recieve 2 errors before it hangs, and the are:

The operating system reported a failure condition during the loading of the overlay (OVL) file associated with the board being added to the system. The board will not be added.

Configuration file name: !CPQA040.CFG
Overlay file name: CPQA040,OVL

And,

Caution
The operating system reported a failure condition during the loading of the overlay (OVL) file associated with the board being added to the system. The board will not be added.

Configuration file name: !CPQA045.CFG
Overlay file name: CPQA040.OVL

Hope this helps.

Hmm, seems that the whole system partion may have a problem.
try this.

1. Check to make sure switch 6 on the system I/O board is set to OFF.
2. Remove the CPU cage and reseat it, keep an eye on the velcro strips holding the PSU air baffles in place when you do this as it can ride up causing the cage to seat incorrectly.
3. Make sure that the cables are correctly seated on the drive cage backplane.

Both the system i/o cage and the CPU cage should have locking screws in place. But the cages do unseat, especially if the server been moved. There are some other things to try, but have a go at these first

Thank you Walter349 for replying to my plea for help.

I took you advise and checked switch 6 on the I/O board was selected to off. I tried it switched on to make sure the NVRAM was cleared but the server just repeatedly rebooted. I removed the CPU cage and checked the air baffles were lying flat and that all the cables were seated.
You also mentioned about the locking screws which I presume are the locking clamps on the rear, if so the CPU cage clamp is missing but the cage appears to be fitted 'very' adequately without it.

What do you recommend next? A skip? :)

Thanks,

There should be a screw that go through the chassis and lock the cage in place, this is seperate from the external locking handles, which often break and do not secure the cages in the chassis properly. If you did not have to remove the screw with a Torx T15 screwdriver, then they are missing and need to be replaced.

Do get the chance to select F10 for the configuration utility ? If yes, then do so and let the config utility run automatically.

It is possible that the CPU processor board needs to be replaced.
