Hi guys,
I'm the last year at the faculty and i've chosen to do my final project in data warehousing.I've already read some books
and got some knowledge about data warehouse. When i tried to use oracle warehouse builder, it ended in failure from the beginning, . Can you give me an advice on which tools to use to create the data warehouse?or what are the steps to be performed to start a session in the OWB for creating a data warehouse,or what documentation do you recommend me to read to get clear in using a tool for creating the warehouse.
I would be very grateful for your responses.

Hi igorkas01,

If you need a good data modelling tool to use in your data warehouse project, you should check out the Power*Architect, a powerful OPEN SOURCE Data Modelling Tool developped by SQL Power (a Data Warehouse, BI consulting firm). You can get more information here:
It does reverse and forward engineering to most databases, data profiling and alot of other stuff.

I've used it and it is very intuitive, sophisticated and the forum for support is excellent!! They are really good guys who know what they are talking about and will help you with your needs. So far, im very happy with this tool. Its free!

Hope you like it!

Goodluck

OWB is a tool that generates PL/SQL code. Personally I don't like it very much, but that's not the point... I think that it would be better for a graduate project to write your own code instead of using a tool.
Pick a simple project, I suggest just one small star schema, and load it using PL/SQL, T-SQL, php or whatever language you choose, you will learn a lot more than using a tool.

On the subject of Power*Architect:

Does anyone have a hint on how to specify a connection for a SQL server instance for a specific database.
I have tried the official Microsoft stuff (on:
but I only can make a connection for the instance (which result in having to write sql with database in the from clause..
