I am running Project 2003 Pro w/SP2 on a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. A problem developed during a lapse in use. When project opens there is no view on the screen. Everything else appears fine. The view drop down does not activate any view and projects will not open. There is no error message. I have registered dlls known to cause a similar problem with no success. My tech can not solve the problem. Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm not sure what you mean.

Do you mean that the "view" item in the menu bar across the top of the screen is not there?

Or do you mean that the icons for each view do not appear down the left side (just to the left of the task names, etc.)?

Both problems are easily solved, just a lot of steps and I don't want to do any more typing than I absolutely have to <grin>.

One other possibility ... do you mean that you cannot see the Gantt chart on the right?

Further clarification for PDQBach. Normally when I open Project I get my toolbars on top, task options and getting started on the left side and a blank Gannt chart. By selecting the view dropdown I have the option of selecting one of the views; network drawing, calendar, task usage etcetera. If I were to open an mpp it would open into a Gannt chart and allow me to change views. Now, the top and left are the same , however, the view portion of the screen is blank except for a fine vertical gray line. The view drop down does not allow me to select a view. When I attempt to open a project the screen blinks and the view remains empty.

Let's try this:
1. Open the project file
2. Click on View | Table | More tables...
You should see a popup window labelled "More Tables".
If it isn't selected, click on the radio button "Task".
3. Click on the "new" button.
You should see a popup window labelled "Table Definition in " <your project file name>
4. Beneath the heading "Field Name" click in the blank space and in the dropdown select "ID"; accept all the defaults.
5. Repeat step 4 and choose "Name" and accept all the defaults.
6. Repeat step 4 and choose "Start" and accept all the defaults.
7. Click on OK. This will take you back to the "More Tables" popup.
8. In the "More tables" popup, click on the "Apply" button.

Let me know what happens.

The more views option is grayed out and inactive. Also, FYI, before starting this thread I uninstalled and reinstalled Office and Project with the complete option. I then tried it with and without SP2.

ok ... (this is getting challenging) ...

What version do you have (Help | About )?
What do you see when you click on Tools | Organizer...

If you see a popup what tabs appear on the popup? Are the active (i.e. not grayed out)? At the bottom of the popup there are two areas where you can select filenames. What appears there? Can you select different items in the dropdowns?

I am using 2003 Professional w/SP2. The organizer pop up comes up and all of the tabs are active. The two bottom drop downs "Tables available in:" allow me to select Global.MPT or Project1.

Hmmm ...

It isn't possible to post a copy of the file or screen shots here. Perhaps you could send the schedule to me PDQBach4100 on Microsoft's free email address.

I knew you were going to ask for screenshots. I already tried to use the print screen and alt+print screen functions only to discover that neither appear to be working. I attempted to perform the function both in microsoft and non-microsoft applications. You see I am the GIS coordinator for my county and tried to do it in ESRI's ArcView software. I do not know if these issues are related but it certainly is broadening my dilemna.

Well, send the .mpp file then and we'll see if the problem is in that file. I was going to tell you how you could easily sanitize it but since you can't see anything that's not going to be much help.

For future reference:

1. View | Gantt
2. Insert the "Unique ID" column
3. Copy the Unique ID column and paste it onto the Task Name column.
4. View | Resources
5. Insert the "Unique ID" column
6. Copy the Unique ID column and past it onto the Resource Name column.

that still leaves a few identifying traces (File | Properties, for example) but should make it essentially useless to anyone who is trying to "social engineer" you to get a copy of the project file.

The problem does not exist in any single mpp file. It occurs with previously created project files as well as new projects I attempt to create. It must lie somewhere within the program itself. My thought is that there might be a conflict with another application running on my laptop. I have thought about uninstalling one application at a time to see if it gets cured. What do you think? I am also thinking about drilling down through the processes when executing Project to see if a collision is occuring or some code is not firing. However, that is beyond my skill level.

Well, at this point, then, I truly am stumped.

I am reduced to the old standbys:
1. Try reinstalling Project.
2. Try reimaging the machine, reinstall project and then one-by-one add the other utilities until you find a conflict.

You could try uninstalling various programs one-by-one but some do not gracefully "depart" and leave behind stubs.

You could try ctrl+shift+esc to get the task manager and then google each item and, if appropriate, stop the process - but many processes are hidden and you wouldn't necessary find the culprit.

Anybody else got any ideas/suggestions/advice?
