Programs won't close from Processes 1

Both WINWORD.EXE and MSACCESS.EXE remain running in Processes after the programs close. Each time they are used, another instance is added in Processes.
Here's what I have done/found so far.
If I stop the Service for MDM.EXE, I can prevent the problem occuring with Word, but not with MS Access
I have tried ending all but essential Processes.
I have done a repair install of Office 2003
I have done a complete uninstall/re-install of Office 2003
I have installed all Office 2003 updates.
If I open Access alone (no database) the program will close completely. If Access has as much as a blank(new) database open, it will not exit from Processes.
I have recently done a repair install of XP, although I had some problem with this prior.
I have run sfc /scannow

Does anyone have a suggestion for the cure, or how I might systematically dig out the problem (registry, services, etc.).

After much fiddling in the registry and elsewhere, I stopped "Symantec Event Manager" in services. This cured the problem with both Access and Word.

Imagine that... a Symantec product causing unexplainable problems.

Any recommendations for headache free anti-virus?

Try AVG, It has the added benefit of being free.

Or AntiVir, same as AVG it is FREE...

I've stopped supporting Symantec, obvious reasons as it is one of the biggest headaches that I have ever come across... Same for BitDefender, as it decides on its own to stop networking in its tracks (at least the two or three installs that I've made)...

I went through this issue with tech support (Symantec 'chat session') last night. ...well ...they had no answer.

I can help you with the Symentec issue.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add remove programs > Remove

After uninstall did you run D:\FILES\PFILES\MSOFFICE\OFFICE11\offcln.exe?

No, I had not tried that. I ran the regular uninstall procedure from add/remove programs and also tried using Windows Install Cleanup.

I just finished reading up on offcln.exe. It may or may not have done the trick, but for me, I'll never know.

I'm running AVG free edition now (Norton 360 uninstalled), and am having no problems so far.

I have used Norton/Symantec products since the old DOS 4/5/6 Norton Utilities days... boy, those were some cool powertoys. The Norton/Symantec solutions, for me, have become an increasing source of annoyance. Too many nag screens and pop ups, too few controls and today many powertoys can be found for free. Now, subscriptions are set up to auto renew, but in the rare event that I need REAL support, after doing serious research and troubleshooting on my own (two days worth)I must pass through a labyrinth of FAQ's and Wizards just to contact a human tech'. No real answer is to be had until I defeat the barrage from the first level tech' and find out that I am being handed off and was not talking to the "Senior tech'" all along. (I am supposed to give remote control of my computer to this person?!)
Do I pay $69.95 for "Priority Support" for real issues?
I have supported Symantec/Norton with my hard earned cash for many years. No more.

sooner or later everyone realizes just how bad Norton is.

I got rid of it a few years ago, ans switched to AVG. its been like a day at the beach with it.

Although for power toys I still keep an old DOS version of Norton Commander handy. Very cool dos file manager that does many things. One of the few remaining pieces of software that still work, well at least up to WinXp don't know about Vista.

When it was just Norton it was great, since Symantec bought it, it sucks. I use to use Norton all the time.
