Programs Opening Slowly(could be cause of hardware)

Allright guys here is my situation:

At work we use HP d530 mini tower machines. So far, I have been very satisfied with them. There is one machine that I have been having some issues with, but I can't seem to figure out what the problem could be. This machine, when opening programs, will open them slowly(maybe about 30 seconds till opening). Once the program is open, it runs smoothly. At first I thought, well maybe some spyware running processes slowing it down. Ran scan and nothing shows. Checked processes and nothing out of the ordinary.

Next, I figured it could be some bad memory, so I tried a memory scan and everything is fine. I have no idea what else to check at this point, anyone have any ideas what could cause the computer to do this? I put this in hardware cause I think it may be some bad hardware of sorts.

Before you assume that it is a hardware issue, you ABSOLUTELY should format and reinstall the operating system running tests before you reinstall all the applications and hook it up to the net.

When it comes to spyware/adware, there are many periods where the worst infections are one step ahead of any anti-spyware tool available. There isn't a single program out there than can catch them all.

The following should be run to catch each other's misses:

- Spybot Search & Destroy
- Lavasoft Ad-aware
- HiJack This! to view all running processes

Also, you will need to go to Start -> Run and type dxdiag. This will give you basic specs on your system (Everest Home is a free download that will give you more detail). Make sure the speed of the CPU, the video card, FSB and RAM is all being reported correctly.

Is the AntiVirus software installed the same as others? Sometimes AV software can slow your machine down doing on access checks.

Well, looks like you guys are right. I did a deep scan with Etrust (our AV) and it did find a java based virus. I cleaned that up and it seems to be running faster. I am going to have the user keep using it to make sure that it is fixed.

On the spyware tip, I have been battling it for quite sometime and I have pretty much squashed it from my company thankfully. The new Microsoft beta scanner is actually pretty good, it is based on Giant Softwares engine. Thanks guys.

Yeah, I've heard good things about the beta scanner. PestPatrol is also another goodie to have but isn't free. It blows Spybot off the map, and Lavasoft's Ad-aware isn't even on the same playing field.

Another really good place for an online scan is trend-micro. They are a good company with a good reputation. I do a scan there every few weeks. They changed the system recently so that now you have 32 choices on what you want them to do. I suggest you stick with just the first one, to check for virus and malware, i forget the second choice offhand but the third choice is to check out and install updates. I prefer to do that as a separate step on my own, not thru trend-micro, so i just do the first choice, the virus\malware scan. It works well and i have never seen it cause any problems for the pc owner when done. I highly reccommend trend-micro. I kinda had the feeling that was your problem in the first place but you said you ran a scan and your processes were ok. That isnt enough but its a good start so i figured you were ok there, wrong again, lol!!
I run trend-micro every week or two.
