I'm a newbie - please be kind.
We have an extension on our Magix system that goes to the elevator. The extension is programmed to automatically dial out to a company that monitors our lines - so that if someone gets stuck in the elevator they are called to help. I need to change the phone number that this extension dials. How do I find that? We have Merlin and WinSPM - older versions running on a Win98 machine. Any help would be appreciated.

That elevator's extension has been programmed as a "hotline", which works by automatically dialing the first programmed Personal Speed Dial number for that extension.

To change that first entry, you have to go offhook at that extension and dial a sequence of codes. The problem is that you can't do that because the moment you lift the handset, it's going to dial! You'll have to first UNassign the extension as a hotline phone, poke in the new number to dial THEN reassign as a hotline phone.

To unassign hotline status, go to System Programming > Start > Extensions > More > More > Hotline. Enter the extension when prompted, then Delete.

Next go to the elevator phone and lift the handset (it shouldn't be autodialing at this point), then dial the following:

1. #00 - puts the extension in program mode
2. #01 - personal speed dial entry 1
3. Enter the extension or telephone number you want it to dial (don't forget the "9" for outside calls)
4. ## - ends dial string/programming

Finally, go back to WinSPM and reassign the extension as a hotline (like the steps above, but without the Delete part).

the program may be in the elevator phone itself or adapter , what type of phone

Thanks for you quick reply. The thing is - our elevator doesn't have a handset - it has a little button for emergencies that calls out to a monitoring system automatically. I haven't traced back which extension that is - and once I find it I don't know how to program that with a new phone number.
Again thanks and I'll be watching for any advice you might have.

Many elevator phones are speaker phones with just a button to activate them. Most include an automatic dialer, and you just provide it with a dedicated dial tone, or a single line station from the Legend. If you find out who makes it (Viking is one very popular brand), and the model number, you can find the programming manual on line. They are usually very straight forward to program.

If it is using the Hotline feature of the Legend, you need to tone it back to the switch, figure out which port it is connected to, figure out the extension number from there, and then print out the station features.

is the "little button" in a box ? does it have emergency on it, does it have a name ? Google it

Does it look like any of these devices?

It looks like the pictures (not Viking - it's a Certified Elevator Co.) but it has a button that says call and little holes - so there's some kind of speaker phone going on behind the panel. The elevator company says that there's no dial box - it must be going through our phone system. I've looked all over the application that programs extensions and I haven't found anything for setting up a hot line. At this point I'm not even sure what extension is being used, except that it must be a non-labeled "transfer only" extension with no mailbox.

You're going to need to tone it from the phone in the elevator car, or from the control panel in the elevator equipment room. Find the port on the Magix that it connects to. Count the boards, starting with the processor as board 00, and then the port starting from the bottom. Once you know the "Slot" and "Port", go in WinSPM or the programming console to Maintenance, Port, Station, then dial *SSPP and press Enter. Now you will see the extension number. Do a print of the extension info and post it back here.

An easier way might be to perform a PRINT ALL using WinSPM. I suggest you do this at end of business and let the report run overnight; it takes several hours to write out all that data at 2400 bps.

When done, open the resulting text file with Windows Notepad and perform a search for "HotLine Extension : Yes" (without the quotes). You won't need any special tools...just start the report before going home and run a quick search the following morning. By 10:00am on Tuesday, you'll be close to having this thing licked.

Being me i would locate the elevator room and find their panel some where in there should be a jack , and ID the line or station that you will need to call, to reprogram the box, you may still have to unscrew the box to find out who makes it to google and get directions for programing
