A particular programme installs normally but just will not run. I have disabled UAC and tried combinations of DEC. I also tried the 'run as admin' option on the .exe - all to no avail. Vista invites me to send MS this error report:

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\WER222.tmp.version.txt
C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\WER14B9.tmp.appcompat.txt
C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\WER1536.tmp.mdmp

The programme runs faultlessly in any XP machine.

Can anyone help please?

It is very possible that the program is just not "Vista Compatible". Here are some options to try though. Right-click the executable file and select 'Properties', then select the 'Compatibility' tab in the properties box and check the box next to 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' option. In the drop-down list make sure 'Windows XP (Service Pack 2)' is selected and click 'OK' to apply the settings. See if the program will run under these settings.

I have run into a problem where running the executable in "Compatibility Mode" did not work, but installing the program in "Compatibility Mode" did. For this, I copied the whole installation package to the local hard drive from the installation disc. Then I set the "Setup.exe" (or whatever the name of your specific installation file may be) to run in "Compatibility Mode" for Windows XP SP2 as described earlier. After the installation completed the program ran with no problems.

Here is some more information on using "Compatibility Mode" in Windows Vista.

- Using Windows Vista Compatibility Mode

- Make older programs run in this version of Windows

Another alternative, if the Compatibility Mode fails to solve the problem, and if you have a spare earlier operating system CD around the place, is to try Virtual PC.

Virtual PC 2007

Of course you could also download and install a similar program that is compatible with Vista.

if the above suggestions do not help, then posting the app name might help in finding out what is the problem...

Thank you so much to all of you for the suggestions - sorry to say the problem remains for my particular app but your ideas are very useful to know about and I shall use them in the future. The Virtual PC solution looks interesting and will give that a try.
I notice that the shortcut to my .exe file and the .exe file itself have accquired an extra icon in the form of a shield (similar to the security icon in Control Panel). I then tried disabling AVG, MS Firewall and Win Defender in case a security issue was stopping the prog running - but this did not change the situation.

What this means is that you have set this program to always run as administrator; hence the shield. It has nothing to do with any security software blocking it. In any case posting the name of the app that you're having issues with would definitely give us more information on your situation and would probably result in responses aren't just wild guesses.

Thanks everyone - very useful info. no virus/spyware found. Problem remains. I have a later version of the same programme that will run properly but which is very bloated; thats why I preferred the earlier and simpler version. Won't waste your time with naming actual prog. It is a specialised little known app used for classical music editing.
Thanks again.
