I have a site manager who, in an effort to make space on their server without buying any internal drives has attached a 120 GB External USB Hard drive. We're running out of space on the C drive thanks to user profiles so he wants me to move them onto the external Hard Drive.

I tested this idea out with my profile. I moved it to the external drive (G) and edited my user information (logging on to the local machine, not a DC) in computer management and pointed to the correct location. When I logged back in Windows had fetched the default user desktop.

Did I do something wrong? or is it impossible to attach profiles to removable media? I know you can to local drives and network shares.

You should set where your profile comes from in Active Directory. Are you running this as a domain controller and you set the new location on an XP machine? Please tell us your setup.

Thanks

As I said, I'm logging on to the local machine. It is not a domain controller. It is a member server, but I'm not logging on to the domain.
