hey, i have a local user account that was a stand-alone pc... it is now being added to a domain. i have created the domain account and can login to the machine fine with it, but the profile is gone (desktop, email, settings, etc)... i went into the registry HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ProfileList\ found the SID for the original local user profile image path and copied that into the domain user profile image path... when i log out and log back in it creates a new folder in the c:\documents and settings like user.domain.001 ... user.domain.002 and so on... what is causing the registry setting to not point to the local profile?

just to make sure i was doing this correctly i logged in as the domain admin and pointed the domain admin profile to the local admin profile and it worked fine?

help???

Also, you can copy your User profile by right-mouse clicking My Computer and go to properties. From there you can click on the Advanced tab and click the Settings for User Profiles. Click on the local user profile and press Copy To. From there find the domain User profile in documents and settings by pressing browse. after selecting the location of the profile, make sure you add permission to the domain user to have access to the files in that profile. This should move over most of your settings.

thanks, for the info...

bcastner: that ms article about profiles doesn't really explain anything, about why i'm not able to point a domain user to a local profile... i have been able to do it many times in the past by editing the registry... why was i able to point the local\admin and domain\admin to the same profile without incident and when i try it with a user it won't save it in the registry?

jmaddone: i'll give it a shot and see how it comes out.
