Product owner and Scrum master can be same person?

Is it advisable for the same individual to hold the roles of both Product Owner and Scrum Master in a Scrum team? What are the potential benefits and challenges associated with a single person fulfilling both roles, and how might this impact the overall effectiveness of the Scrum process?
