I don't see Procomm just "stop working" unless Microsoft comes out with a version of Windows that Procomm is totally incompatible with. The last version of Windows that Procomm was actually developed and tested on was Windows 2000 and XP to a marginal amount, but it is still ticking on. Probably a bigger deal-breaker would be any future features that other applications could add that aren't in Procomm and can't be added.
Now if only someone could persuade Symantec to open up
the Procomm+ source-code to the general public, then it
could be continued developed as an open-source cross-platform
application by the open-source community.
Like many other applications does.
They probably won't do that for a while, I went and looked on Amazon just for the heck of it, you can still buy procomm brand new there, so someone is still making money off of it.
There are pieces of Procomm that are licensed from other companies, so I don't see any open-sourcing ever happening. The cost to dig out or replace the fax communications code from another vendor alone probably could not be justified by Symantec on a cost basis.
It has some shortcomings compared to Procomm's ease of use. But it's a little more programmable. I am currently working with the company in a demonstration for my company. We are working out some of the 'shortcomings'. One of them is the directory structure they have. It's one list. You can't build folder. I have to log into 300+ devices. I need a way to organize these in a folder/tree format. They are working on this.
They've managed to integrate Word, Excel, and VBA into this program. It's pretty slick. Check it out. They have a free demo.
