Using which function(s) can I recognise the processor used on a 80x86 machine? (8086, 80186, 80286, 80386, 80486, 80586, 80686). Regards,

For Pre-Pentium processors and most 486 chips, there is no function call to ID the type of chip. However, there many routines developed to do this. A good source for this is in Dr. Dobb's Journal archived articles at you'll have to do a search for CPU Identification and it's in an undocumented corner from SEP 96.

After pentium, All CPUs support cpuid instruction to recognize the CPU, CPU vendor, Family , Model, Stepping, and CPU features. See the documentation of CPUID instruction.
