I have a problem with my processor some times when I boot my pc and have loaded up my profile the computer will be Very Slow and I run winpulse it show s the processor usage at 100% even when the computer is doing nothing and when I ask winpulse to tell me the processor speed it shows it at lest 50-80Mhz higher that is should be but then if I restart the computer everything is fine it runs Like it should do and if I run Winpulse is shows the processor speed at the correct speed and the processor usage at 0% if I am doing nothing
My processor is an Intel Celeron 400Mhz Slot 1 (was upgraded from a 300Mhz processor about Feb time)
I think that the problem may be that I only have a heatsink cooling the processor and that it’s over heating but I only get the problem when I first boot up So I ruled that out unless it has been over heat and has damaged the chip if this is so then would the processor be fine when I reboot

Does any one have any more ideas or solutions to this problem?

How long have you been running the CPU on just the heatsink for? You might have damaged the CPU by running it without a fan. Granted it would still work in some cases, but you would definetly be experiencing problems like this. If you still have the 300Mhz CPU, I would put that back into the system and see if it produces the same problem.

I have Put the 300Mhz back in
My computer has all ways had the heatsink its how it came when I got it (About 1998) and I have never had a problem with 300Mhz Processor
I have only had a problem with the 400Mhz in about the last 3 weeks
Is there any chance that the 400Mhz ever work fine again ________________________________________

Hmmm that's a toughy. It might be that the motherboard doesn't support 400 Mhz. i've had a lot of stabillity problems putting processers that are faster then the mobo supports. PS NEVEr get an FIC motherboard. i have had three of them die on me. New mobo should help you on that one and will probably be better for uppgrading in the future. But that's a shot in the dark. Check your MOBO books.

Just for reference Celerons upto and including a slot 333 generally were passively cooled, beyond this they had a fan fitted, you could well have damaged the 400 running it with the passive fan from the slower processor.
Having said all of this I dought if it is your problem, more likely a roge program running in the background.
Don't forget some heat transfer paste on the base of the heatsink. Martin Please let members know if there advice has helped any.

so far I haven't had any problems since having the 300Mhz back in so I think tha it is a roge program running in the background

Any other Ideas? ________________________________________
