Processor Benchmark issue?

Hi, I am posting this for a relative and can obtain any additional information if needed.

When the system is booting (Unfortunately I do NOT have bios make/version info at this time) it is displaying Pentium 4 but displaying run speed of 1.6 GHZ.

When displaying System Properties -> General, shows Pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHZ but on the line below displays 1.6 GHZ.

A benchmarking program was run which also showed the processor performing at 1.6GHZ.

My gut instinct was that there was a bios issue with this. This is not a new computer and previously displayed roughly 2.4 GHZ under System Properties but recently there was a PSU issue which caused severe system failure. The PSU was replaced, and system is up and running, but at this slower clock speed.

Any thoughts? I will be traveling a moderate distance to look at the system this weekend and any info is MUCH appreciated. Thank you.

Make sure the FSB in the BIOS is running at the correct speed. If in fact you bought a 2.4GHz replacement and the FSB is set correctly, then I would suspect that the new CPU is meant to run on a faster FSB.

Older P4's (Williamette and early Northwood) ran on a 100MHz FSB "quad-pumped". Newer P4's use either a 133MHz or 200MHz FSB "quad-pumped". In addition to the FSB setting, verify that the CPU is compatible.

cdogg as usual is right on the money, I would say this is definately a processor front side bus issue, lets hope it just needs an adjustment and they havn't fitted a differant model P4 that isn't compatible with your motherboard.

Thanks for the tip. I will check the FSB settings. I may have been unclear regarding the system failure that occured. This did not require that the MoBo or processor was replaced. The only damage was the Power Supply (PSU) and the Graphics Card which needed to be replaced. Thanks again, hopefully its easy to correct.

As a note, I do believe that the Bios were reset so hopefully that is the problem.
