Our company is trying to switch over to Citrix and one application we are switching over is Great Plains and have been doing a lot of testing to make sure we have everything working and cover before we completely use it in the Citrix environment.

They want to do a complete checkrun in a like test environment (a test company) of a complete copy of another company (our main company). My question is, could it be possible to export data from one set of tables in our main company to this test company that are involve in the checkrun process? I would of course need to know what tables I would need to copy over. Maybe it would be best to copy the complete database over.

I have been searching the forums about copying a company. I just want to know is it really safe to take the database that has our main company offline and copy the db files and do a re-attach of the copied db files and bringing the main company db back online? Even if both companies db's have two different db names, would there be a confliction since both companies have the same name? Would I need to change the copied company name first and then bring the other back online?

How about creating a new db and doing a restore of a backup copy of our main company to it? would that be a better idea? just won't be the most current copy, but it will do.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Andy

if it's just test, what I do is make a backup of my main database then restore it (forced restore) over top of my test database.

and they wonder why they call it Great Pains!

jaz is correct. There is also a very good Techknowledge document on Customer Source or Partner Source. If you need a copy just let me know - my email is:

Good Luck!

Thanks jaz and btamulis! I appreciate it.

I think going with the idea of restoring a backup of the main company database over the top of the test db is the best way to go since I know I won't miss anything and I don't really need the most current up-to-date data. thanks jaz!

I'll give it a try then!

i just thought by doing that would be confliction between the 2 companies with the names, but didn't think of that being in the Dynamics db.. the company master table, if I am not mistaken.

There is a new automated solution on MBS that will run through this process almost seemlessly. It even runs the Interid.sql script when done. Let me know if you want to try it out!
