I have an RS/6000 with AIX version 4.2.1.0. In an earlier post, I discussed my failed attempt to install an external 73.4 GB hard drive (Seagate Cheetah Model number: ST373404LW) drive, and was given the excellent suggestion of upgrading to 4.3x. Unfortunately, we have an application (on a Brisque from Creo/Scitex) that limits our upgrading the OpSys.

Although I believe that I am using the correct procedure through smit, request a good reference for adding a drive to AIX 4.2.1.0. Looking for something that explains how to see the file system the other drives are using (JFS or NFS), how to specify volume group and mount points, the limitations on volume size, the real basics.

TIA.

are u able to see the disk first.

try
lsdev -Cc disk
and see if you are able to locate the disk and that its status shows available.

lsdev -Cc disk returns, for the drive in question:
hdisk4 Available 30-58-00-4,0 Other SCSI disk drive

Thanks for help so far.
