In an effort to learn something new and utilize some legacy hardware I decided to build a debian/samba server for storage of IT files for the rest of the department. Things went smoother then I expected until this point which I can't seem to get past:

From samba and I ca browse our whole windows network, access the servers with our domain admin credentials and read/write to them.

From the windows machines I can find the samba server in network places, connect to it with our domain admin credentials and read but not write.

I am fairly certain my issue is in the way I created the users and groups but I just don't have enough knowledge of this stuff to know where to begin troubleshooting. I would greatly appreciate any tips or pointers you could throw my way.

path = /home/administrator
available = yes
browsable = yes
public = yes
writable = yes
valid users = administrator

In the global section, what value do you have for 'security'?

Thanks for the reply!

I do not have 'security' under the global section, but it is listed under the authentication section. In that section I have:

security = user

Again, thanks for taking the time to respond.

Perhaps try explicitly adding a 'write list' entry in your share section

eg.
write list = administrator

Iam running Fedora Core 6 with the latest updates as a Samba server. I can see the folder Im trying to access but Im denied after logging in using the user account assigned to that folder through Samba. I have MY Oreillys Samba Book but I must be missing something ?

Have you created samba users with the smbpasswd command?

have you tried username map = /etc/samba/smbusers

and in the smbusers file added a line
root = administrator
