I just used PC Relocator to move my old PC data to a new system. All is well except for my Word docs. Now when I double-click on a Word file, in explorer, to open it, Word launches, but I get the following error message:

Word cannot open the document.
Try one or more of the following:
*On the file menu, click Open to open the document.
*Make sure the document has a DOC extention

When I click OK, I get the following:

The document name or path is not valid.
Try one or more of the following:
*Check Path to make sure it was typed correctly.
*On the file menu, click Open. Search for the file using this dialog box.

When I click OK, the document loads.

If I launch Word and do a File, Open the document loads with no problem.

How can I get rid of these nasty error messages?
thanks in advance

I say it has to be your file association for .doc extension.

Check what command is running for the .doc extention.

It should be something like:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" "%1" joegz
"Sometimes you just need to find out what it's not first to figure out what it is."

Thanks I had found this reference on the MS website... I made the change and now Word loads, then the document loads and I get this error:

Do you want to revert to the saved "filename"? I see no difference whether I answer with a yes or no... I get this message with newly created files or old files that were saved prior to the migration.

any ideas whats causing this?

Try ;

1. Is it the doc(from the previous PC) is opened in other pc?
2. can your word application open other(not the trouble doc) documents without any problem with the same way(double clicking the documents)?

Don't bother with all this reassociating...just reinstall office which will automatically do it.

Not really, Word 2000 will open .doc files instead, Excel 2000 will open .xls files, Access 2000 will open .mdb files and PowerPoint 2000 will open .ppt files.

Just as you'd expect...

Only thing I can think of is that Word 97 can't open some Word 2000 documents (same for other programs). This will only be an issue if for example you work on Word 2000 at home and then take it to work where they have Word 97 etc.

FYI I tried one of the fixes listed in MS Q200915 article..

I ran "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /unregserver

then ran

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /regserver

Problem solved... thanks to all who responded
