Just added Win 98 on a new hard drive(my old 20GB crashed)... All programs work great, but the HP Scanner. I went to the Install new hardware and the only items it saw during the load was a Kodak Digital Camera and even when I placed the HP CD into the drive it would not find the proper drivers, etc. I tried to also load it under RUN and the software was placed on the hard drive but Win98 still does not see the Scanner?

Which 98? Which interface? HP stuff I've worked with recently required scanner to be disconnected during software install. On first cold boot after install it will see it. Ed Fair

Seeing as you are using Win98 and its a HP scanner, I presume there is a USB connection to it...????
What to do is first of all remove everything from your PC got to do with the scaner, ie, software and the digital camera it picked up...then disconnect the scanner from your PC.
Now install the software for the scanner, with the scanner still disconnected. Restart your machine if the software asks. If not shut down and connect the scanner. Power on the PC and windows will find new hardware its self. Let it go through the process and with the software you loaded it will detect it as a scanner and not a digi-cam. This should solve your problem.

PS...if its a SCSI card, install the card from the CD and then connect the scanner, make sure it is listed in the hardware profile....
Hope this helps Jay~

If it is a USB, you many need to first remove the vid keys from the registry. The best thing to do is unplug the printer from the PC, then remove any software. After that is done go ahead and click on start/run and type in regedit. Click on HKEY Local Machine, then enum, then usb, then delete anything that says VID. After that restart the machine and when you plug in the printer it should be detected. If not you may need to debug the usb port.

"edfair" & " KeyTech" We are still having problems!!! I did remove the Kodak Digital reference that the PC was looking at. I never had loaded any digital Kodak Camera!!! So when that came up on the screen I was some what confused???!!!@@@

This is what I have done since the first question!!!
I have Win 98 Sec Edit with USB connections. This HP Scanner worked on this PC before I had to install a new 40GB (the old drive Crashed). So the System "mother board, etc. works. Windows 98 Sec Ed. just goes to the installation screen and will NOT find the proper drivers, etc. from my HP Installation CD. So what next? Any ideas! I loaded the software with the HP Scanner disconnected. Cool booted the PC and then connected Scanner. WIN98 did not find the HP Scanner so I went to the install new equipment icon. Here I followed the directions and when it ask me for the CD I placed it in the drive. Again following all directions. It asked me for the .inf file and No where on the HP CD is there a autorun.inf (File) the nearset file name is autorun.exe.
So that did not work. I am open to any and all ideas.
Thanks again
Harold

Don't like admitting defeat, but the last one I worked with required a reload of SE before it would load the software. Then with the scanner powered on for the next cold boot it was found. But it still didin't work with the printer , even with the latest HP drivers. This on PIII. Moved it to the PII next to it and everything OK.
So it appears that there are potential CPU/MB/software issues still out there.
The successful load of scanner stuff on the PIII required the SE reload , then when it abended , the removal of everything scanner or HP from the registry then software re-install. Scanner then ID'd on the next boot. Scanner worked fine. The printer test page came out grayshade and never was able to copy from the scanner to the printer.
Probably had 16 hours elapsed on the problem, so I understand the frustration you are feeling. And, yes , the scanner had been working on the SE before there was a hard drive crash and replacement. Ed Fair

Have you actually checked the files on your CD for .INF files? (You can do this by going into My Computer and holding Shift key down so AutoRun doesn't play when you click on the CD-ROM drive). It sounds like you were doing good up to the point where you were installing hardware manually. I've had to go looking for the right .inf file to load many times and by trial and error will usually find it while installing manually. Hope this helps. Good luck.
