I am trying to upgrade a StarTalk Flash system from ver 1.7 to ver 2.1. I was told to power down the Flash unit, remove the old feature card, and insert the new feature card. Power the system up, all programming and messages should be intact. Alas, it ain't so. When I powered the system up and tried to check my voicemail, I got a message "Inactive Feature". I rebooted the MICS, no change. I checked in the MICS and the extensions assigned to the StarTalk are not disabled and are listed as idle. I tried both feature codes, 983 & 913. Same result. I tried putting the ver. 1.7 card back in, same result. Rebooted the MICS again, no change. Any ideas, I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

I did that before (typed F913 rather than F903 in initial post, sorry). I just did it again and got the same "Inactive feature". Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Would be great if I could fix this before anyone noticed!

To perform a StarTalk Flash software upgrade:

1 Open the module front door.

2.Remove the teladapt cord(s) from the teladapt line jack(s) inside the StarTalk Flash module. Important: This step must be completed to avoid any possible loss of configuration or programming information.

3.Wait one minute before proceeding to the next step.

4.Unplug the AC power to the StarTalk Flash module.

5.Remove the current PCMCIA ROM card.

6.Insert the new PCMCIA ROM card into the slot provided on the StarTalk Flash module.

7.Re-insert the teladapt cord(s) into the teladapt line jack(s) inside the StarTalk Flash module.

8.Plug the AC power back into the StarTalk Flash module.

Much better instructions than those I got from the vendor, thanks. I just did exactly as you said. I still get an "Inavtive Feature" message when I try to access my VM box, but when I use F983 I get a password prompt. When I use what was the default password, it exits. When I dial our outside line, I get the AA and the CCR appears to be intact. I started breathing again, felt good! F981 produces an "Inactive Feature" message. Any additional thoughts? I'll start wading through the manuals.

Ok, I've explored the system a bit more. The internal voicemail boxes are active, when I call an internal extension, I get the correct recording and it takes a message. I haven't found a way to check those messages yet. The CCR is working, it routes correctly and takes messages etc. Thanks for your help, I feel better than I did 30 minutes ago. However, getting the messages without being able to check them, only looks good! i'd appreciate any further advice. Paul

I noticed that I get a password prompt, not a log prompt, when I use F983. I've tried using just the password portion of the default login, and I've tried using the whole thing, all with no joy.

WE GOT IT! When you upgrade to ver. 2.1 the default password changes, and the prompts I saw were to initialize the system. Once I went through that process, everything began to behave normally. Only having the 60 users or so come in and use their boxes, etc will tell whether I lost anything as a result of my error the initial upgrade process. Whatever it is , I'm sure I can fix it, now that I can get in to the admin view of the voicemail system. Thanks for your help, have a great weekend - Paul B.
