I recently hooked up my monitor to my laptop to project the screen. However when I did this the screen on the laptop now has two BIG black bars running down the side of the desktop, it is basically that the laptop screen is within another black box.

When I go back to the laptop's monitor options in Control Panel > Display, there are only 2 possible resolutions, (used to be 5),

Where it used to let me decide between display monitors there are no options any longer,

And in the Advnaced panel, under the Monitor tab, I have the Monitor Type as "Default Monitor" only and the properties button is grayed out. The screen refresh rate has one option: "Use hardware default setting".

I have taken out the connection to the monitor and laptop and restarted it but the same black border appears.

Please help! Any help will be greatly appriciated and thanked upon.

Thanks!

Just a guess, but have you tried pressing the relevant Function keys to change monitor output?

On a laptop you usually have some combination like Function + F4, which cycles between the display modes. ( e.g. 1 - Panel only, 2 - External Monitor only, 3 - Panel and External Monitor together )

If you have it in the wrong mode it may be displaying the panel incorrectly.

Nope, when I press F7 (the monitor display button), I get two choices, LCD (current) and setup, when I go into setup and change the resolutions, nothing happens. Also may I note, when I go to Start > Shut Down, I do not have the option of hibernate.

Brand and model?

Sounds your display adaptor has gone crazy a bit.
You could try and have a look in the BIOS, see it stretch display is enabled, if that option is there (just guessing, as we do not know the laptop brand).

Or, in Windows - device manager, remove the adaptor (ONLY if you have the drivers handy!) and reboot, Windows will pick it up again.

Hibernation - Check in the power settings if it is still enabled if you really want to use that.

Never mind, I just did system restore to before I projected the screen. Thanks for your help and time anyway!

System restore should have been one of your first items of business.. it doessn't always do the trick but it is there for a reason.. if you have the option use it first.

good you got it fixed, but, don't forget you still don't know the cause. Next time, you may not be so lucky so you better test BEFORE there is a next time!
