I've got a problem with transfer-speeds over my home-LAN. I have two computers connected to each other using a 10/100 MBit Switch. A cable-modem is also connected via the switch. Both Computers get their IP-Adresses via DHCP and the Internet-Access from both Computers works fine.

The problem starts when I try to transfer files from one Computer to the other. Sometimes it works fine but most times they are transfered with very low speed. Usually only at the speed of the internet connection and not at 100 MBit (both Computers have 10/100 MBit-Cards build in).

I assume it is a configuration problem, but I don't know which one.

One possible problem could be, that one of the computers is a Laptop which is usually connected to our domain at work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What is the ip of both computer?
Do a ipconfig at the DOS prompt and give me your IP.

I bet you are using (2) public IP from your ISP and that is why you transfer speed is the speed of the cable modem. Your transfer went to the ISP router and back to your computer. That is not the way to do it if you want computer to computer transfer with your private network. Your computer is also very "open" to hackers. Be careful!

The first ip is 217.162.16.135 (subnet 255.255.252.0),
the second ip is 217.162.17.100 (subnet 255.255.252.0)

I thought that it probably went to the ISP and back but I don't know how to change the settings that it works properly (while still being able to use the internet connection).

Do you have any suggestion how to improve security to be aware of hacks or do you know a good link pointing to some tutorial.

Thanks very much for your help!

Simon

One simple solution is to go buy a LinkSys router/hub/firewall combo for less than $100. This should give your the bandwidth that you need between computers and your computers are protected.
