hello to everyone im running the comand extendvg roottvg hdisk1 to add the new file system to my actually system but when i run the command send to me this message.

# extendvg rootvg hdisk1
0516-1162 extendvg: Warning, The Physical Partition Size of 32 requires the
creation of 1084 partitions for hdisk1. The limitation for volume group
rootvg is 1016 physical partitions per physical volume. Use chvg comman
d
with -t option to attempt to change the maximum Physical Partitions per
Physical volume for this volume group.
0516-792 extendvg: Unable to extend volume group.

when i look with smitty, my hard disk is there but i can add this new disk to my system show me the message above.

anyone knows what´s happen or what i have to do ??

Probably you should increase the PP size for your hdisk1 from 32M to 64M. As the message informed that the rootvg limits the maximum partitions for 1016,if you use PP size 32MB for hdisk1, 1084 partions will exceed the 1016 limitation. You can change it using chvg -t as mentioned above.

if hdisk1 is larger than 18gig, you need to use a larger PP than 32meg to utilize all the available disk space. or change the VG to allow a higher MAX PP value.

hi

i had the same problem trying to add an additional disk to rootvg.rootvg has 2 4gb hdd ,when adding a 8gb hdd to rootvg complains with same error message you have, either you have to add the same disk size to rootvg or change the pp size of rootvg more than the current value you have eg 16 to 32mb as what ddlldd2000 has mentioned.i hope it makes sence.certain disks requires a minimum pp sizes.

hope it helped !!

hello.
extendvg rootvg hdisk 1 -t 2 will fix the problem.
There is a limit of pp the -t option will increase the pp limit

You can't change PP size on a pre-existing vg as far as I know. If this can be done, I'd definitely like to know how. The way I always get around it is do:

chvg -t 2 myvg

Or some other number if the factor is already 2.

thanks worked like a charm.managed to add 8gb hdd to rootvg.

regards

whet probability i have if a run the chvg -t 2 rootvg command to break my system my hdisk0 its of 20 gb and my hdisk1 its 37 gb if i run this command will increase my actually size to 57 or how it works this ??

JUST A note cuz you asked....the disadvantages:

The disadvantage to using the mkvg -t or chgvg -t command is that increasing the
number of PPs allowed per disk will limit the number of disks allowed in the
volume group. If the 1016 PP/PV limit is maintained, you can add up to 32
disks per volume group. There is an inherent limit of 32,512 PPs in the entire
volume group. If the PP/PV limit is changed to 4064 for a particular volume
group, then only 8 drives may be placed in the volume group, even if those
drives do not use 4064 PPs each.

The relationship of factor -t, PP numbers per physical disk, and the number of
disks allowed in one VG:
Factor of -t
PP Num--Disk Number of disks in VG
1 1016 32
2 2032 16
3 3048 10
4 4064 8
5 5080 6
6 6096 5
7 7112 4
8 8128 4
16 16256 2

Only volume groups that have been created with a factor size other than 1, or
that have been to a new factor size, can exceed the 1016 PP/PV limit.

Any volume group created outside the default factor size or changed to a
different factor CANNOT be used on systems less than AIX 4.3.1, even if the
factor size is later changed back to 1. An example of the error received when
accessing the volume group will look like the following:
0516-002 lqueryvg: The volume group version is incompatible with this level of
the operating system and cannot be activated.

Note: These options are only available from the command line, not from SMIT.
IBM says that the logical volumes in the volume group must be closed for
chvg to successfully change the factor size. In rootvg we have done it in
service mode....and also in multiuser mode without closing. We did have to
reboot right after doing the change though. Remember also to have a good
mksysb, just in case you have to reload over multiple disks.

Hello,
For the rootvg that has only hdisk0 and wants to add hdisk1 then chvg -t 2 rootvg will fix the problem. He is not going to add 8 disk.

well tahks for the help i cant run the command before but today i will run the command and im going to tell you what happen
