My mother in law has been having problems with her newly purchased Dell Dimension 5100c regarding her video jumping intermittantly. She has called Dell multiple times, but when she calls, she cannot get the machine to start "jumping." I originally thought that it may be a defective video card, however, I am told that this model doesn't have the traditional "card" in the motherboard and that it is incorporated in the motherboard. Due to the fact that I don't want to jeopardize her warranty, I have not opened the tower myself. Dell is telling her it may be a software issue, but this problem has been ongoing for more yhan 5 months now and nothing has been fixed. A local PC repair place close to her home said it may be the wireless router. Does anyone have any other ideas and/or suggestions?

Have her run the system with just the Dell supplied components connected. If the problem still happens, then have Dell either fix the problem, or replace the system.

The random "Jumping" you are experiencing is most likely caused by one of the following.

1. Monitor overheating. Make sure the airflow around the monitor is good. If there are photos / paper on top of the moitor remove them. If it turns out that airflow / overheating was your problem you may need a new monitor because once a monitor starts jumping because of this it is usually shot. ((Not always though so try and get it a good amount air around the back of the monitor. I have had 3 monitors "POP" because of bad airflow and all of them started with the jumping))

2. Small desk fan or similar small electronic device around the monitor. Belive it or not jumping can be caused by this. I have seen MANY people complain of jumping monitor and I just turn off their desk fan and it stops. ((I dont think this is your problem though because it is nomrally described as a shaking and not jumping, but I wanted to include it. Anything with a moving motor inside of it should be moved away from the monitor))

3. Refresh rate to low. I know it sounds silly but I had a montior set at 65 and every 5 minutes the moitor would do a very "hard" refresh that looked like it was jumping. I have only seen this once, but hey lets try everything.

I would reccomend to change your refresh rate its probably not set up correctly change it to a higher setting and see what happens
