Hello,

I've got a problem with the database engine in our
Arcserve 2000. The database engine won't start anymore.
The tape and job engine work just fine. When I view
the arcserve logfile, I see a lot of entries with
the error code -2005 ("unable to login to database engine",
and "failed to login to Arcserve database")

I've tried a number of solutions offered here: removing
the r*.* files from the database directory, removing
all the files from the temp directory, enabling the
debug mode for a better understanding of the problem.
This doesn't work.

The engine uses the local system account, and it worked
fine. The password for this account has not changed.

I can't re-initialize the database,
or use dbcheck, because the database engine will not
start at all. When I start the engine using ArcServe
Server Admin, it says: "engine is starting", but after
a minute this proces stops and the engine is not
started. There are no error entries in the eventviewer
of Windows, and no entries in the logfile of Arcserve.
The logfile only says: Database Engine is Stopped

The rds.log file says:
CATPATH variable C:\Program Files\ComputerAssociates\ARCserve\DATABASE
Catalog error: UNAVAIL

So I can't start the (corrupted) database to repair
it. Does anybody hve a clue why the engine won't start,
and how to solve it?

I also noticed that the arcserve.log file is VERY
big, about 80 mb in size. Is this normal? There are
also a number of $0000xxx.log files in this directory,
from a year ago... can I delete these files?

Thanks for your help!

Right click My computer/properties/advanced/env. variables..

and delete the variable RNNAME and reboot your server to fix the problem...

Hi
My advice is to copy the current database to a safe location
and install Arcserve in another machine and copy the database folder from new instllation to the live server and start the database Engine This is should solve your problem.

Thanks for your replies.

- I will try to remove that variable and restart the server. Is this variable so important to ArcServe?

- Do you mean that I should backup the database directory and use a new one from a new installed ArcServe installation? Or are you referring to antother database?

As you might have guessed, my knowledge about Arcserve is not that great! I'm still learning a lot though.

Thanks for your help!

Hi
Yes,backup the database directory and use a new one from a new installed ArcServe installation.

BUT,Whenever you want to restore by tree from any tapes you need first to Merge the tape to database also you will loose your media pools, since there is no other alternative do it at least you start
your backup instead of wasting the time with backing up your important data.

Suppose I backup the contents of the database directory,
and then remove the files, will the database engine
still work? Or do I loose a lot of important settings/ data?

Hi
Read my Prevoius thread....you will need to merge the tapes before doing any restore for all backup done before you palce the new database.
If you are using media pools then you need to recreate them again.
