Hi,

this is the first time that I write on this forum and that I use Btrieve DB end I have just a "simple" problem.

I have a directory with file .DDF .DAT .IDX and I must to read and export the archives to a new SQL server DB and I'm not able to do this.

Can you dedicate some time to help me?

Thanks.

Hello,

If you have crystal reports or another simple query tool I would wirte a crystal report to get the data, then export it to access or excel which makes it very easy to then convert to SQL.

Please call me if you like, after 9am EST.

Thanks for the response,
but I'm from Italy so I can't phone to you.

I have cristal report ver.4.6 and I have tried to open the DB without success.

Can you help me more exactly?

Ciccio.

I have never used Crystal V4.6 but here goes.

Create a new crystal report and browse to file.ddf. This is the data definition file. Double click on file.ddf and all of the data tables in your database should come up. Pick one, and then select all fields in the data tableto be on your report. Execute the report and hit the envelope icon for export options, and export to excel.

Alternatively, if you cannot do this, email me file.ddf and the data files (.dat and .idx) and I can do this for you and email you back the excel files if it is not a lot of work.

the problem is that I don't have: files.ddf,fields.ddf,index.ddf.

if you can give me your email address I can post yuo the list of files I have.

I hope in your fast response.

Thanks.

If you do not have the ddf files I cannot help you. You need to get these files from the maker of the database. Software Support for Macola, Crystal Reports and Goldmine

If you don't have the DDF files you will need to create them. Any 3-rd party product including Crystal or ODBC needs the DDF files so it can extract the data. You can check out BtSearch at to help you build the DDF files. It will help you analyze your Btrieve files and create the DDF's. The other alternative is to contact the original program vendor and see if they will provide them. Gil

Doesn't DDF Ease create a ddf file okay, and doesn't it come with PVSW already?

I ask because I'm not sure my ddf files are right, and I'm thinking of starting from scratch.

Yes DDF Ease will create files along with the DDF files. Actually the latest version of Pervasive does not have DDF Ease but embeds it within the control panel.

If you have the need to view your existing Btrieve files and create the DDF files then BtSearch can help you out their, although you can also create new files inside of BtSearch also. Gil

if u know the structure of the btrieve database files, then u can search for a utility called as btfiler, which will allow u save the files as ascii text in line sequential form, which can then imported in ur application.

My company uses Peachtree for it's databases, and I can't stand it. Does anyone know of a program that allows you to edit .ddf files the way Access does .mbd's. I'm getting tired of using Crystal Reps as a middle man, and I have to see the actual tables so I can write SQL with a minimum of brain work.

If you need to edit DDF files you can take a look at BtSearch at However, before you make any changes to the DDF files make sure it will not affect your existing Peachtree application. It also has export features as well. Gil
