1st my main dvd drive the hp dvd840 doesn't recognize dvds and i don't know why and 2nd my sony dru-800a is listed as a cd drive on my system. Is there anyway to fix these problems?

try this for the drives

Right-click My Computer.

Click Properties. The System Properties window appears.

Click the Device Manager tab.

Click the plus sign (+) next to CDROM.

Double-click the CD-ROM name, and click the Settings tab.

Under Reserved drive letters, select M (or the previously assigned letter) from the pull-down menu. Make sure that both the Start drive letter and the End drive letter are the same.

Click OK, Close, and then click Yes.

There are no additional drivers for Windows XP and HP doesn't support the use of XP on this machine, from what I can see. You can find out for yourself by popping over to the HP Support Center and searching on your workstation

The Registry fix mentioned in this article, has fixed so many posts about missing CD's and DVD's etc. that it is worth trying.

You could also look at removing both drives via the Device Manager, rebooting and allowing Windows to rediscover them.

System Restore might be worth a try too.

Another brand of DVD disk is another idea to look at.

Perhaps there is a Firmware update available from the manufacturers?
