I am using Pagemaker 6.52 on a PC running Windows XP. I'm creating forms for a hospital that include a black and white logo image. When I export the document to PDF, the logo imgage (and any other image I'm using on the form) comes out fuzzy/grainy. Any idea why this is happening and how I can remedy the problem?

When I send the same PM file to my co worker, who is running PM 7.0 on a Mac, she converts it to PDF and the image prints out looking just fine.

What format is the black and white logo image, and how did you import it into PM?

Have you set the "Send Tif/Images" option to Normal and NOT to Optimized in PageMaker's print dialogue? Click on the Options button and set the "Send Tif/Images" option to Normal and NOT to Optimized.

See this FAQ: Imported Graphics Issues

Note also that Adobe do not support PM6.5 on WinXP, primarily because it is so old.

It is a .TIFF file and I "placed" the image into the PageMaker file.

Yes

I read the FAQ and none of the issues addressed my problem. Interesting though.

they are buying me the InDesign upgrade for PageMaker this week. I'm hoping that will help, since there seem to be compatibility issues with PageMaker and XP.

Great news - you'll love InDesign.
Click here for Adobe's Guide to using InDesign for PM users.

From what you say, I still suspect the TIFF - is it a simple mono-bitmap? Open it up in Photoshop and resave as greyscale.

We're running PM7 on WXP and are having problem when converting files to PDF for prepress.
We are using the printer's settings in distiller but inexplicably black stripes and black blocks appear over text and photos in the PDF but not on every page.
Up till now the printer has dealt with these anomalies in Pit Stop but we would like to get to the bottom of the problem to save time at the other end.
We have tried dismantling the page, starting with virgin settings, placed (and not cut and pasted) all text and graphics, converted Word docs to rtf. etc. and yet this problem still occurs.
However when we file export through Adobe PDF the problem goes away, however graphic quality is lost.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Are you using *.WMF metafiles? They can produce that effect. Remove then if you are using them and see if the problem goes.

Fonts can also produce that effect - see this FAQ: 1.8 - Mysterious black streaks appear in PDF

That just means you're using a different joboption for Distiller.
