Problems starting computer

When I start my computer, it always stops and says "Floppy Disk: Fail" and I have to press F1 to continue to begin. It goes normal from there, but when it starts I get a message that says "Error Loading: C:\WINDOWS\system32\pccdpvia.dll the specified module could not be found" and the box is titled RUNDLL.

the Floppy Disk Fail error, could be an indication that your FDD is failing, if you do not need it try turning it off in the BIOS...

the second error, could be a piece of malware, since I did not find anything on the NET about it... suggestion: DL HiJackThis from Trend Micro HiJackThis at C/NET and do a scan and post it here for us to discern it...

BBBen is correct...but you can also just remove the floppy from the boot order in BIOS to eliminate this message, although I agree simply disabling it in BIOS would be better.

Questions: Does the floppy drive work? If not, is the FD activity light on all the time? This usually means the ribbon cable is reversed. Best of luck!

I dont have a floppy drive at all. I was a tad distressed when it said it failed because I did not have one in the machine.

Yes...go into BIOS and look for floppy drive, usually under "system" or "devices". You may have to hunt around to find it. Disable it there.

Run every spyware scanner you can. pccdpvia.dll is an unknown process everywhere I've looked. Adaware, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, AVG A/S, A-Squared Free, and Windows Defender are just a few of the free utilities, most are available at

Soulfein - run a HiJackThis Log and post it here... that way we can better help you on this...

and do follow wahnula's suggestion that you should run every scanner possible, also go to Trend Micro's HouseCall online viral scanner and have the PC tested...

when cleaning a PC, make sure that System Restore is turned off, and old restore points are deleted...

I was snooping around in my BIOS and found a setting for "Wait for F1 if Error"...which, if available to you, should be switched to "off".

Still, we're just repairing the symptom, not the cause.

See if there's a corresponding startup item in Win Startup:

Start==>Run==>msconfig==>Startup will display current applications loading when Windows loads. It may be as simple as disabling it there by un-checking the related item.

You have a number of entries in the log that show (file missing). Delete these.

I would also see if you can't knock out (temporarily) some or all of the spyware, adware, antivirus stuff that's running. Conflicts can occur.

And since one of the "file missing" reports relates to Norton (Symantec), it might be worth completely uninstalling Norton.

I would follow what G0AOZ said, and remove NORTON (use the Norton Uninstaller found on their website), and install another AntiViral Application (e.g. AVG or AntiVir)...
