I recently installed windows xp pro from xp home and my internet connection has been wiped. Tried manually setting up connection and when asked in internet connection wizard to choose modem connection (the top option) it is greyed out along with second option and only bottom option (broadband connection) is active.
Also, error 711 comes up when trying to add internet connection.

Anticipating help
Thank you.

How ARE you connected to the internet and do you have administrator priveleges?

Hi Franklin,
Connected through internet service provider with a 56k modem - telophone line. I had no problems manually configuring with XP home, but now with XP pro, I am having troubles.
Not sure what you mean about Administrator priveleges!

Thank you

if the top option is grey out it could mean that windows does not see your modem. Go to device manager and see if your modem is on the list

Hi Juzz,

Install service pack 1 (SP1) and that will fix it
Cheers.........

shaker,
Tried installing service pack 1 and message came up saying "expected version not found" or something similar. I am typing this at work on mac, my problem is at home, I cannot remember exactly what it said.
If I could I would uninstall XP pro and go back to XP home but can not find XP pro uninstall or remove in add/remove programs.
I have also been told to try installing modem drivers again but we have a new HP computer and I found no discs with computer other than program discs (works, encyclopedia etc).
Stealer,
I havent checked to see if modem on list yet but i will do.
Any other help will be appreciated.
I read on another site someone had exactly same problem and they were told to buy new modem drivers for XP pro, but the site expert said XP is XP and modem drivers are the same.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you all Juzzo66

Also configuration errors come up now and then when trying certain things.

Go to the HP website and type in the model of your machine. It will list the drivers that are specific to your machine. Find the one for the Modem and download the XP drivers. Installing the drivers should hopefully fix the problem.

If you want to uninstall XP Pro you should be able to do it by Inserting the XP Disk and then when it auto runs select install. You should then be presented with the option to Remove/Uninstall.

Any feed back is appreciated.

greg,
thank you for your time, I downloaded modem drivers and installed them but no joy! It still won't let me manually set up my internet connection.
I'm reluctant to uninstall xp pro, because I haven't the XP home disc to install if anything goes wrong.
I ran a modem test and is working.
When I tried installing SP1, the message that came up was exactly this "the expected version of the product was not found on your system."

Everything else works fine on computer, excepet this problem.

My computer is an HPa340a.

any other advice would be appreciated.
Thank you Juzzo66

SSshaker, thank you for your information regarding SP1, my first try did not work but I downloaded another much larger version from another site and it restored my original internet connection and everything is sweet!

Thank you to everyone for your help.

Also tried installing critical update Q329441 but would not open. Message saying "Could not find program that created it".
