I am currently attempting to set up a domain on our LAN.

I have a Windows 2000 server machine with active directory set up.

I also have a few Windows NT 4 sp6a machines and a few Windows 2000 professional machines which I am attempting to add to my domin.

I do not have any problems adding the NT machines but I can't correctly configure the 2000 pro machines!!!

Please Help....

I am logging on as an Administrator
and have entered the usual Network ID info...

I can see the domain within my network places and I can see and access the windows 2000 machine from the server and from the other nt machines. But I can't access the network from the 2000 machine.

When I do I get:
'There are currently no logon servers available to service your request'
I have used netdiag.exe on my 2000 server machine and it fails on the following:
1.
IP loopback ping test. . . . . . . : Failed
[FATAL] IP loopback failed.
You may have a problem with your IP stack.
- I can ping other machines from the server - but not itself!
2.
DNS test . . . . . . . . . . . . . : Failed
[WARNING] The DNS entries for this DC are not registered correctly on DNS server '158.152.1.58'. Please wait for 30 minutes for DNS server replication.
[WARNING] The DNS entries for this DC are not registered correctly on DNS server '158.152.1.43'. Please wait for 30 minutes for DNS server replication.
[FATAL] No DNS servers have the DNS records for this DC registered.
3.
DC list test . . . . . . . . . . . : Failed
'DATACHASE': No DCs are up.
I have used netdiag.exe on on of the Windows 2000 pro machines and it fails on the following:
1.
WINS service test. . . . . : Failed
The test failed. We were unable to query the WINS servers.
2.
IP loopback ping test. . . . . . . : Failed
[FATAL] IP loopback failed.
You may have a problem with your IP stack.
3.
DNS test . . . . . . . . . . . . . : Failed
[FATAL]: The DNS registration for 'server4.datachase.oracledatabaseconsulting.com' is incorrect on all DNS servers.
4.
DC list test . . . . . . . . . . . : Failed
'DATACHASE': No DCs are up.
oh and it also takes a long time to logon to the domain - about 20 mins 30 mins!!!!!

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!!!
Charlie

Right sorry - I guess IP stack relates to the IP addresses of all machines in the domain. Wasn't sure what IP stack was all about.

Just waiting for my server to boot up before I can back it up and start the reinstall.

It been booting up for about 1 HOUR now!!!! with the screen:

loading personal settings.....

Thanks again

Charlie

IP stack means all protocols related with TCP/IP. Of course thatis related to LOCAL IP stack!!! BUt, how are you able to communicate using that protocol if that protocol on your computer is not working properly?

Sorry was that just an explanation or are you asking me a question?
Not sure what you mean by how are you able to communicate using that protocol if that protocol is not working properly?

Still not booted up after approx 1 hour 45 mins!!!!

Will wait and format the machine once backed up.

Cheers

Charlie

Well,... was just a rethoric question.

Just REINSTALL!

During the reinstall I would also advise you not to enter the dns entries for demon, use these as within the dns forward lookup within DNS. Dont have them as dns on your IP Settings...

I sympathise with your isntallation, I havent ever encountered that before myself, but in general, anytime your localhost/loopback address fails to respond to ping either your IPSTACK is corrupted or your NIC is defective.
since the NT4.0 machines can use netbeui to connect to the 2k server, that rules out your NIC being defective (not to mention you can ping them as well)

now for installation keep it simple is the first rule
then build on it once its working, there are two schools for AD install (dont get pressured into either, choose the one that is best for you) the first is manually setting up AD via DC promo, the second is to use the configure your server wizard, I have done both 100's of times, I generally use the manual method on single server installs becuase I can spare attention for the process, if I am setting up 3 or more server I generally go with the wizard and over the last year I have had no issues, (300+ servers) with either.

The wizard will pretty much do it all for you, after you give it the inital FQDN and setup DNS for you as well.

goodluck

Thanks again to all for your input.

I have formatted the drives and installed windows 2000 advanced again.

I am just about to run through the configuration wizards etc. to setup the server + dns etc.

But is there anything I have to do to the windows 2000 client machines which contain Documents and settings folders named Administrator.datachase (i.e. Administrator.domain name).

Just by removing the machine from the domain does not remove this. ..........

I just want to be sure everything is as it should be before setting up the dns etc.

thanks

Charlie

I selected 'This is my only server in my network' from the server choices menu but I get the following message:

Because one or more servers already exist, you cannot configure this server as the only server on the network.

I think this may be due to the fact that other machines on the network still think there is a domain named 'datachase' used in the previous server configuration.

Does anyone know how I can get round this?

Thanks

Charlie

oh and I assume I don't have to use dhcp?

Hopefully this thread will come to an end soon - getting a bit big!! Thanks
