Ive decided to set up a secondary domain controller underneath my exchange server, but Im running into errors trying to get it set up through the wizard. Both the PDC and the SDC are running 2003 server. The PDC is also hosting DNS, which is set up correctly.

So, on the machine Im trying to set up as a SDC, I run through the wizard, select the defaults (specifying this as an additional DC) and then it runs through its installation process, and comes back with the same error:
-------------------------------------------------

The operation failed because:

Active Directory could not create the NTDS Settings object for this domain controller CN=NTDS Settings,CN=WINEXCHANGE,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=WIN-CAB,DC=dev,DC=win-cds,DC=org on the remote domain controller win-project.WIN-CAB.dev.win-cds.org. Ensure the provided network credentials have sufficient permissions.

"The Directory Service cannot perform the requested operation because a domain rename operation is in progress."

-----------------------------------------------------

Ive troublshot this for a while, making sure all the permissions were set correctly for the admin account on both machines. I reinstalled my dns server just to be sure it was right. I am wondering if my excessively long domain name has something to do with the problem (not picked out by me) as there are multiple objects in the FQDN but really only one subset of the domain. I dont know, but Im kind of at a loss right now...any suggestions would be appreciated greatly.

a domain rename operation is in progress"....

something being done by the admins upstream????

by the way, no longer such a thing as PDC & BDC, each DC has a writeable copy of the domain partition...

Check with root domain admins if sth is going on.. and if not, then use DCDIAG on your 1st DC and see if all is well!!

Its a very small network, Im the only admin, so nothing is in a transitory state, especially domain namining-wise.

OK. I ran dcdiag on the original dc and on the second machine pointing back to the original dc. They both passed, excexpt for the systemlog test, which failed on both systems.

After running dcdiag on both machines I went to the second machine and tried to configure it as another DC, I got the same exact error as listed above.

Anything else I can try?

Eric

is this a production server?

could you try the renaming tool, and make your domain name simpler in the process.???
is this possible?
