Hi,
I have this *.exe runs in XP SP1. When this *.exe runs, it will read some text files in pre-defined paths/directories. The directory path is defined in registry, of course.
When I switch this exe to run in Windows 2000 compatibility mode, it failed to read those text files.

I am not certain what is happening here. It seems something is blocking the directory path. If the exe runs in XP, it runs fine. Does anybody has any idea ? Help ! Thanks !!!

Phil

Hi,

Help ! Any idea anybody ? Thanks.

When you change Compatibility Mode from XP to 2000 are you the same Username?

Maybe the 2000 username doesn't have access permissions to the Registry.

Type - Getting older programs to run on Windows XP - in the Help and Support program for the basics.

You can set compatibility mode for NT service pack 5. Setting this mode may work especially as XP is based more on NT than 9x Windows..

However not all old programs will work in XP no matter what compatibility mode you select. It does seem to be a matter of trial and error.

How to Use Windows Application Compatibility Mode.

Much more help here.

You can check out old programs here too.

Thanks for your reply.

The *.exe runs fine in XP windows 2000 compatibility mode, but failed to run in XP SP1 windows 2000 compatibility mode. It is just that it couldn't read some text files in XP SP1. Something has been changed in XP SP1 that did this. I have granted the same user all the rights to run and read all the files/programs includeing all registries, but with no help. This Service Pack 1 certainly actually broke few things, but not fixing it.

Thanks.

Phil

If that is the case you haven't many options left.

Possibly there may be a XP update or patch for this program you could locate.

Uninstall SP1 and live with the consequences.

Replace your program with a similar one that is compatible with XP.

Set up your machine as a XP 2000 dual boot.

Hope you get it fixed soon.
