I hope someone can help this inept home office user !!

Everything fine until about 3 weeks ago, and then, all of a sudden I get error messages when opening files in MS Excel and word.

The problem seems to relate to the file path of the document or spreadhseet. For example, if I have a document whose path is c:/documents/ians files/holiday/holiday spreadhseet.xls, I will get an error message stating that that c:/documents.xls could not be found. If I Ok this message, I'll get another stating that c:/ians.xls could not be found. Ok that and the next one will be the next component of the file path. This continues until the document or spreadsheet finally opens. Obviously, depending on file path length could be between 5 and 10 error messages.

Would be really really grateful for any advice.

Try this and see if it helps...

Close Excel. Click the 'Start' button and then click 'Run'. In the 'Run' box, type excel /unregserver and click OK. Next, click the 'Start' button again and click 'Run'. This time in the 'Run' box, type excel /regserver and click OK. The Windows Installer box will pop up, let it run through its routine. After all is finished and the install box has disappeared, restart your computer and see if the issue is resolved.

Thanks illogicallylogical.

Tried what you suggested, but actually got the same error message - "c:/unregserver.xls cannot be found" - as I have been getting when I try and open a file. Also, I did not get a Windows Installer dialogue box.

Regards

actually for the regserver and unreg..... u need to type the whole path. for example, C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Excel.exe /unregserver

i put office 11 above, u need to find what version you have.

and same thing for regserver.

but, before u do that in Excel uncheck "Ignore Other Applications" under Tools, Options, General, if checked

Thanks but still doesn't work - I get a message saying that the file (unregserver) can't be found....!!

Take a look in Options under Tools. You've got a default file location and alternate location setup.

Clearing these out should sort the problem. No idea why, but this happened to me a year or so back, and that fixed it.

Cheers,
Dave
