Problems moving mail to a PST

When trying to either archive mail or simply move mail from an Exchange mailbox to a PST file.

The exact error message is:- "Can't move the items. Some items could not be moved. They were either already moved or deleted, or access was denied"

After OKing the error the mail is still in the folder, but if you try it again it may move out. Sometimes it takes more than one shot at it.

Anyone seen this before and know how to fix it? Tried technet and got nowhere.

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I've had this problem before, I'll describe my situation & draw any conclusions:

Multiple servers, multiple mailboxes
Error you described when synch'ing to OST or exporting to .pst
Slight correlation to attachments (I.E. basic text e-mails went OK, those with attachments took a few attempts)

We eventually tracked it down to NAV & the exchange add-in.
It was configured to scan everything on receipt of new signature & scan on access if not accessed within 7 days.

If we stopped the NAV for exchange service you could move mail no probs, once the service started, the problems re-appeared.

Symantec issued a reg-fix to disable scan on access which fixed our problem.

The error message is given due to the NAV service holding the move request until the e-mail has been scanned.

**so...**

1) what AV have you got set-up for exchange
2) what, when and how is it scanning

Where can I obtain this for for NAV? I have tried searching their website but cannot find this reg-fix. A link would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have NAV for exchange installed already. I would like to apply this fix so I would not have to change antivirus programs.

I have Norton Corporate Edition and only have this problem on a few stations. From what I have gathered it is their Journals that are failing. That is where I get the delay and when doing a pst backup. They are putting Word or Excel docs that have read only permissions or something like that. I never use the journal so I don't fully understand what exactly it does, but those few users / staions use them on a regular basis.

I have tested one anyway and all the mail is there, its just some of the journal items that are missing or not restored.

I had the same situation archiving/ moving older emails in the active mailbox with attachments.
I enabled background scanning of attachments on NAV for Exchange and the problem went away.

Where can I obtain reg for for NAV? I have tried searching their website but cannot find this reg-fix. A link would be appreciated. Thank you.

Any help is highly appreciated>>>>
Please help urgent !!!!!!!

I reconfigured the NAV service to run in VAPI/MAPI mode and everything seems to work ok.
After you enable this your server will use a lot of CPU during a couple of hours and it will scan the IS.

I am currently running in VAPI/MAPI mode and also have Background Scanning enabled, yet I'm still having the same problems.

I had this same issue after patching Exchange 5.5 with some post-SP4 fixes. Check this page:

Keep in mind that these settings can also be changed in the administrator interface of your NAV for Exchange.

I finally had to disable MAPI mode in NAV for Exchange altogether and go with VAPI mode instead, which is available on my version of NAV Corp. Restarting the NAV for Exchange service (which is done in the admin interface, not the Services panel in NT) is essential to make this go away.
