I'm running HPUX 11 and I am attemtpting to install Oracle version 8. Everytime I mount the CD-ROM using the command:

mount /dev/dsk/c0t4d0 /cdrom

All of the exectuable files have a ';1' appended to it and I can't execute any of the intall scripts.

ex: RUNINSTALLER.;1

anyone have any ideas on why this is happening. I think it has to do with the type of File system but I'm not sure. This doesn't happen on other machines running other OS. Anyone know how I can get around this.

Thanks,

Lancbar,

I rememeber that I had this problem and fixed it by re-reading the install instructions, can't remember how exactly but the software doesn't install straight from the CD. It creates a "staging post" on your system and installs from there. Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

I didn't quite resolve the problem, instead I copied the contents to a Sun box, used tar, used ftp to transfer the archive to the HP box and then untarred the contents there. Not the best workaround but it worked. I'm still kind of curious on a better workaround for this for future knowledge.

Thanks

Hi,
I am sure that Oracle CD's does not work properly if it is mounted the usaul way. I remember that the CDROM drive mounted using pfs_mount (Portable filesystem). Use this command instead of the actual mount command .

Like

pfs_mount <special file> <mount point> .

This should possibly let you read the files in the CD .

Hope this helps you . Thanks

I had the same problem some time ago install Oracle 8.0.5 on a L1000 running HP UX 11.0. I administer the system remotely so had to rely on someone to physically put the CD in the machine. After a few telephone calls back and forth I found out he had put the CD for HP UX 10.20 in the machine. When the HP UX 11.0 version of Oracle 8.0.5 was put in the machine all the files appeared noramlly and the install went OK.

Hi Lancbar,

Sure was right, you need to use PFS to mount your CDROM. Got to do a couple of other things though.

First of all you need to check whether a couple of daemons are running and if not, start them. They are pfsd and pfsmountd. They need to be started in a particular order and you need to get it right. Start them with nohup, because if they die whilst the CD is mounted, it will REALLY UPSET NFS (even if you don't have NFS exported or imported f/s, PFS uses it). If you upset NFS, you and all your users will get the message nfs server not responding, to which the only fix is to reboot.
After the damons are running, mount the CD with the pfs_mount command as sure said. You won't have to provide the device file, if the /etc/pfstab has the CDROM device file entry in it.
Make sure when unmounting, you use pfs_umount, as again you will upset NFS.

It is simple, as long as you follow the order.

Cheers
queenie

I'll bear that in mind then, as I'm about to install 8.1.6 on a 10.20 box, thanks all. Mike
