I just built an XP box and am currently reloading the software. When it came to DISK 2 of OFFICE 2000 (I need Publisher), it wouldn't work. There is a big scratch on the CD which may be causing it. I doesn't find some of the files.

XP just gives me an error telling me that it can't find it and do I want to IGNORE or RETRY.

Why doesn't it ask me to specify a location? I have the old hard drive connected with the original load on it, I could tell it to look there and it would be able to pull the .exe and so forth from there.

How can I get it to do this?

Thanks. Sean.

The most straight forward answer would be to buy one of those CD Repair kits and pray that it fixes the CD scratch well enough to have it function.

I don't have Office 2000 myself, but is it possible to install it from files copied from the CD (like many a Win9x install)? IF you can keep plugging away at it and get the CD to relinquish all (or at least enough) of it's files, you MAY be able to get the install to work from a hard drive directory.

This assumes the install program keeps track of where it was installed from as opposed to a CD drive letter reference in the registry.

Sorry about the late response. I did get the Office installed. I began with the proper CD, entered the key and install began, when it failed, I switched to a different Office CD2 and it worked great! Just had to get the installer past the security, then it just wanted the files.

I can't remeber exactly, but I believe that it did not have a Browse button on the message, it only wanted the CD, which means the hard drive would not hav been an option.

Thanks so much> sean.
