Hi, I just got a linksys wireless-g router model WRT54G today and i am having trouble making my connection a wired connection instead of a wireless one. I have a speedstream 5200 modem with a dsl connection already and i connected it with the wireless router. I want a wired connection for my upstairs computer (the comp. connected with the wireless router and speedstream wired modem) and a wireless connection for my downstairs computer. If anybody would help me with this it would be greatly appreciated :)

I have windows xp with service pack 2 installed.

My problem is that i want a wired connection instead of a wireless one on my computer connected to the linksys wireless router and the speedstream 5200 dsl modem.

Sorry if i wasn't specific enough.

What have you tried so far? Did you follow the installation/setup instructions in the Linksys manual?

You just have to first make sure you have the ethernet cables plugged into the right ports. The DSL modem plugs into the WAN port, and you can connect the PC to any of the LAN ports. Then open up your browser and go to 192.168.1.1 and follow your instructions from there.

This might be a case where the default settings for the DSL modem overlay the IP assignments of the Linksys.

Disconnect the DSL modem. Unplug both modem and computer.
Restart both, modem first. Then computer.

Now access the web-based setup page of the Linksys router again.

Set the starting IP address for the LAN side of the router to 192.168.2.1 instead of its defaults.
Save the changes.

Now redo the cold start of modem, then router and try again.

Best wishes,
Bill Castner

2 questions...

1. is the main computer connected to the router in the 1st port of the switch ??

2. is there another wireless device picking up the signal ??
