Whenever I try and access SSL encrypted websites I get the 'The page cannot be displayed' message with 'Cannot find server or DNS Error' at the bottom of the page. The error comes up almost imedietly after clicking the link to go on the page.

I have tried the usual things like ensuring in the internet proporties I have SSL 5 and SSL 6 on - in fact I put them all back to their defaults and still no luck. The problem is with both IE5.5 and 6, but I can access secure sites in Opera. The problem does seem to affect MSN messnger which I can no longer log into, and Turbo Lister (the eBay listing program) won't let me log in.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions on this as it is very annoying - if it wasen't for opera I wouldn't be able to access any secure sites and without MSN Messenger I am at a very loose end!!

Many many thanks to anyone who can help.

I read about that on the internet and I checked - they are!

Thanks for the suggestion though!

What OS are you running?
Also, when in IE, go to Help, About IE. What's your Cipher Strength reading?

I'm on Windows ME and the Cipher Strength is 128-bit.

Many thanks.

Generic fix first:

"You may just have a cache or cookie problem. Export your cookies using file/import and export.
Shut down all programs and boot into dos if you are using Windows 95 or 98. If using Windows ME use an appropriate disc to access DOS. Run the following commands from the windows directory, typically c:\windows\>

smartdrv
deltree history
deltree tempor~1

deltree cookies

Reboot using ctrl, alt, del if using Windows 95 or 98. If using WindowsME remember to remove the boot floppy."

Please advise if this works or not, and we'll move on...

Also, if you're running Norton Internet Security, InternetBoost, and/or McAfee firewall, please temporarily disable them and advise if problem persists.

For the 1st bit where should I export the cookies to?

And would it be OK in ME to run dos as a window within windows?

As for running dos within a window, no problem.
Don't worry about exporting the cookies. Just delete them (the commands pasted above will do this).

Whoops...misspoke. You have to do into true dos. You can't run it from a window while windows is running (at least I can't on a 98 machine--I get an error that smartdrv can't be run yadayadayada....)

SORTED!!!! I emailed my ISP and they pointed out I was trying to connect to a proxy server.

Thanks for all your help anyway!

FockeWulf,
If you're having the same problem as Paul, then perhaps this will fix it:

1) Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections
2) Click LAN Settings
3) Make sure everything is unchecked, especially "Use a proxy server"
4) Hit OK twice and restart IE

Let us know if that helps...
