I purchased a Linksys Speedbooster wireless-G broadband router for my desktop (Compaq Celeron XP Home Edition)in order to provide wireless access to my laptop (IBM Centrino XP Pro).

I followed the setup as described in the guide and connceted my dsl modem to the router and the desktop to the router.

The problem is that I do not have internet access on my desktop and have no idea why. The laptop is picking up the wireless router but of course I'm not getting any internet connect.

The IP address of the router is 198.168.1.1 and I can ping it no problem.

Any ideas out there?

Your DSL modem may have a conflicting address.
Set the router to 192.168.2.1, and after saving the settings power off both modem and router.
Power on the modem, and let it stabilize.
Then do the same for the router.
Finally, reboot your workstations.

Just tried your suggestion bcanster but with no luck. I cannot ping the router now and when I look at ipconfig, 192.168.1.1 is still showing at the default gateway. Furthermore, this means that I can't reach the set up on the router through my internet browser as it no longer recognises 192.168.1.1 or .2.1 for that matter. I have to push the reset button on the router to be able to access the set again.

Anything else I should be doing?
Thanks

Update - I'm now seeing the router as 196.168.2.1 so it's taken the update fine. However I'm still not getting access via my modem through to the internet. (The modem is a Netopia Cayman 330 series).

I cannot access it's setup when it's connect to the router....so no surprise really that I'm not getting out to the internet.

All working now. I had not plug things in correctly following that change of IP address.
Many thanks!!

The linksys software for the USB network adapter model WUSB54G will not hook up to the internet thru the router.

A solution that works for Windows 2000 is to not use the included software but install the device useing the windows update option on the install wizard instead.

If you already have installed the Linksys software uninstall it first, then do a search of the drive and registry for duplicated components and get rid of them.
