A client sent me a Word file with approximately 1700 index codes embedded from Word. A large proportion of entries fall into one major heading.
When I attempt to generate the index in InDesign CS2 v. 4.04 the computer just sits there with the hourglass spinning... and spinning.
Tests with an earlier version Word file got as far as processing entry 1350 of 1700 before the process just hung.
What I've tried:
1. Splitting the file into smaller sections. I thought there might be a problem with an entry.
2. Slitting the longest major index entry into two sections.
3. Creating the file on two other computers running earlier versions of InDesign CS2.
4. Creating the file on a Mac running InDesign CS2 4.04.
At this point I'm about ready to tell the client that we need to drop the Word indexing and re-create it in InDesign.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
