Problems displaying history in IE6

Can someone help me with the following:

I just installed IE6 and am already regretting it.My history no longer
works. In the history area I just have an index.dat file and a "desktop"
file which reads "[.ShellClassInfo] ConfirmFileOp=0
CLSID={FF393560-C2A7-11CF-BFF4-444553540000}". These files regenerate. Any
thoughts on how to get my history back?

I hate "me too" posts, but this problem has me stumped. IE6 history works fine on my desktop with Win XP, but the history function only shows index.dat and desktop.ini on my laptop's IE6 under Win 98SE.
