I occassionally have problems deleting files or directories on our 5.1 servers. When I try to delete certain directories, I get the following message:

"Cannot remove folder xxxx. Access is denied. The source file may be in use"

The files/directories are definitly not in use and I am logged in as Netware Admin. They are not flagged Delete Inhibit. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Have you got File Caching enabled?

SET CLIENT FILE CACHINE ENABLED

If so, turn it off.

Can you delete these files from DOS? -----------------------------------------------------

Even though I'm not getting any error messages when I try, I can't seem to delete using DOS (Deltree) either. I tryed to disable File Caching, but I can't find the Set command you mentioned. Thanks.

Sorry, spelling mistake.

SET CLIENT FILE CACHING ENABLED
-----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

I was able to run the Set command, but it is already set = Off. Any other ideas?

How long is the complete filename (better the complete path) of the files you are trying to delete? Sometimes I have users naming their files with a name as long as the introduction to a scientific lecture. And combined with sub-sub-subfolders there are sometimes file/pathnames w/ more than 254 characters ;-(
I am not really sure if the limit is 254, but often shortening the pathnames starting at the beginning helps.

KOH has a very valid point there. People should be discouraged from using a sentence as a path name. I am not too sure about the limit myself nut it is around 256 characters from the start of the server name eg.

servername/vol1:direcory1/directory2 etc.... -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"
-----------------------------------------------------

Long file names wouldn't be my problem - these directory names are very short, like five letters or less. The only difference is that the sever these files are located on are not at this location, but at the end of a T-1 line on the other side of town. That shouldn't make a difference, should it?

Are the files definately not in use? Check in MONITOR on the server to see whether they are or not.

Also check to ensure the specific files are not flagged copy inhibit which can also cause your issue. -----------------------------------------------------

Filer showed me the problem. When I tryed to delete the directories through Filer, it came back and told me the directories were flagged Delete Inhibit. I don't know how these directoruies got flagged DI, but removing the flag allows me to delete them. Thanks again.
