I have some serious network problems that I like to get fixed. My parents want me to set up a homenetwork with our home computer (AMD Duron 700, running Windows ME) and the portable (Intel 1000, running Windows 98SE).

I installed two network cards in the 'mama'computer, a Realtek 10Mb to access the internet and a National Semiconductor fast ethernet adapter to connect to the homenetwork. The 'baby'(portable) has a SIS fast ethernet adapter.

to connect I use a cross-over UTP cable.

I installed internet connection sharing on the mama, but I can't get the network working. They both find theirselves (ping 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.0) but can't communicate.

I've tried really everything: setup manually, removing everything and setting up via the ICS wizard, Programs from internet, ... all without any succes.

It's really driving me crazy, 'cause my parents keep nagging about that network. WHAT DO I DO WRONG???

I don't think winME can route. That would be your problem. It cannot take addresses in one interface, decide where they need to go and route out the correct interface. I believe you need 2k to do this. Or why not a SOHO router, they are very inexpensive these days... Matt Wray

Also don't give yourself headaches with ip addresses like 192.168.0.0... Change it to 192.168.1.1 and .2 to save some possible headaches.

psychoplop,

You CAN install and use ICS on WinME. I don't like ME myself and would recommend upgrading to 2K or XP but that's another issue. This link provides excellent info regarding installing on ME.

I agree with jpm121 - use better IP addresses.

Here is another link for troubleshooting assistance.

If you've gone through this and still have no better results, post back with specifics and we'll try to help.

Good luck.

I would like to know the set up procedure to make a connection between my main desktop computer and my laptop which both run on Windows 2000 Professional. They both have ethernet cards.

JAKE3912,

You will need a "cross-over" cat5 patch cable to make the connection. They can be easily found at most computer stores.

Then follow the steps at this link.

You can skip to step 3 since you will have the cable and network cards.

Good luck.
