I have a sytem with an IDE drive, from which i boot, and an extra sata drive. I came by another IDE drive that I would like to connect, but when i do so the system can't find either of the IDE drives and won't boot. However, if I only connect (any) one of them it is found and i can boot from it. I have autodetect primary and secondary IDE drive enabled in the BIOS. Both drives are on 80 GB. I'd be forever grateful if anyone could give me some pointers.

My system:
Abit NF-7 mobo
AMD 2800+
1 GB ram
win xp, sp2

I'm sorry, just after posting this thread someone told me that i had to set one drive to slave on the actual disk. So I did, and now the POST finds both drives and i can boot from my primary drive. But i still get "primary slave disk failure" and i can't access the drive in the bios or in windows. It's weird, because I know the disk works, since i could boot it as my primary drive.

How can you "boot from my primary drive. But i still get "primary slave disk failure" ? If it fails, it won't boot. Do you have the primary boot drive as master (end connector on IDE cable), and the other drive as slave (middle connector on IDE cable)?

But it's the slave disk that fails. It boots from the master disk. The IDE cable is connected as you described.

Are you sure the jumpers are correct on BOTH drives (eg, the master drive may have 2 different jumper settings - one as master without slave & one as master with slave. And the slave should be jumpered as slave of course). Or you could set both to cable select.

If you have only one CD/DVD device on secondary IDE controller, you could try letting second drive share withthat instead.

Ah, that was it. My master was set to single drive. Thanks a bunch.
