I have recently purchased a new pc with XP home as the OS.
I install NetwareClient 4.9, but I can find the server.
The other workstation that is running win98 has no problem logging on.

I uninstall 4.9 and tried to install 4.83 and run into install problem. I get this message: "Unable to locate valid control and install INF files: SETUPSP.INF".
Well I checked the folder and the file is where it should be.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

does the client support xp home

the microsoft client doesnt support it joining a microsoft domain so not sure if novell support it either

?

I was thinking about that, too, but I could not find any documentations stating which version of XP. All it said is win2000/NT2000/XP.

XP home is very limited with it's networking capabilities. And the official Novell word is that it's not supported. It's not a Novell limitation though, it's because of what is left out of XP Home.

You are right. That is what I get when I let my boss do the shopping. I gues we'll be returning the pcs.

Thanks guys.

Or, if you are tech-savvy enough, keep the PCs, just put XP Pro on them.

Upgrading to Pro was one of the options, but they are not cheap either at $199 a pop. I think we are going to return the units and buy them pre-installed which would be cheaper.

Rule #1: Don't let a non IT person buy any tech stuff.

My boss use notebook with Windows XP Home Ed and NW client 4.83SP2. Evrything works without any problem. I think you should check your network connection, types of IPX/SPX frames (they should be the same on server and workstation ) or TCP/IP settings.

I tried loading NWC 4.83SP2, and it would not load.

Sorry for stupid questions. Do you have administrator rights on workstation? Does your NIC work properly?
Do remove all NW client installations from workstation and try to get access to MS network.
If it doesn't work remove NIC object from Neighborhood properties and restart your comp. After restarting do network setting again, get access to MS network, see other comps of your netwok, ping them and after having evidence your NIC and TCP/IP work correct install NW client.

Administrator rights - Yes on some PCs Tried both and have no success.
NIC is working properly - I can access Internet and E-mail and also peer to peer on a couple of machines.
The only thing I cannot see is the Novell Server.

Novell say they don't support Windows XP Home but I installed client by myself on two notebook Toshiba with XP Home installed. There were no any problems.
Are you able to install client on workstation completely? Wich of protocols do you use for connection to NW server? TCP/IP or IPX/SPX stacks? In case you use IPX/TCP do you check type of frames (802.2 or 802.3) used workstation to connect to server? Try network analizer to recognize what the pakets go from the workstation to network.

i would swap them

lets face it no one will support home not ms or novell
so you may fudge it to work but will it support the next client , zen agents , sus updates etc

or will you keep hearing that phrase - oh it's not support you need to upgrade
or downgrade pending on you interpretation of ms

I am working with a client now that has gotten several XP home systems to work with the Novell client. but that doesn't matter. We're switching them to XP pro so we will continue to run on a supported platform. Who knows if the next version of the client will run the same as the one they have now? Right now they have 4.83, but in testing, 4.9 has not been as nice on XP Home version. It's always better to go with the officially supported version. That should be a no brainer.
