problem with wmp in windows xp pro

Hi i have a critical problem with one of my friends computer you know what its so funy when ever you try to open the windows media player it gives you generated error and send dont send message and all this he formated his hard disk and installed windows xp 8 times but he cant fix it atlast he asked a help with me and i also cant i tried to change the hdd new and installed fresh but its the same thing when you try to run this wmp it gives error .we changed the ram chnaged the processor changed the hdd but it didnt went i think it from the vga what you think.

Is it only media player that has a problem?
What is the error message?
Hardware sounds likely - is the soundcard defintely ok? Does any other sound app cause problems (eg, download and run winamp).
