I have a problem that's bamboozling me... I don't if anyone knows a fix.

I have an Evga GeForce FX 5600 XT (256 MB) card installed in my system

My system was working with the 56.56 drivers. I have Windows XP Pro (all latest patches), with an Asus MB, 2.6 Ghz P4 Processor. The system is not running overclocked. I needed to install the latest drivers due to OpenGL problems I was having with certain software.

The problem is, I tried to install the latest drivers in my system, but they didn't install. And now, none of the drivers for this card will install in my system.

Once I uninstalled the old driver, and then rebooted, Windows XP Professional detected the card, but as a 5600SE (different model), and then failed to install it correctly with a message that indicated that the driver wasn't installed correctly. So after that, I tried to install the drivers by running the setup program, for the latest drivers from the NVidia site and eVGA's site. The driver appears to install, however, when the computer reboots the driver is still not installed, by checking the driver under Windows XP computer management.

I tried uninstalling that driver and going back to the 56.56 driver but that produced the same result, the driver didn’t install and the system ran on the VGA system driver. I then uninstalled that driver and tried to go to the original driver on the disk included with the card, but that didn’t work either.

So now I’m stuck with the system VGA driver and can’t seem to get the 5600XT driver to install no matter what. So far I’ve tried the following:

- Reapplied the Windows XP patches in case any files were overwritten.
- Uninstalled the drivers, and reinstalled numerous times.
- Rolled back the driver.
- Booting in VGA mode and Safe mode and trying to install the driver.
- Using the system restore utility.

My system isn’t usable right now for what I need it, and I don’t want to have to reinstall the entire operating system, so any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

thanks!

Norman

did you go to the nVidia site download the new drivers install them - then in the device manager go to the properties of the video card - select update drive have it automaticaly search for the driver if this doesn't work - try this
in the device manager go to the properties of the video card - select update drive - go to install from a specific location - go to don't search I will select the driver - uncheck show compatible hardware - and manually select the video card you have.

Thanks for the reply... I tried that and it didn't work. Right at the end, it says the installation has failed.

I wonder if a required file was inadvertently deleted from WinXP somehow... and if it would be possible to fix that.

I would make sure you have uninstalled all the old drivers.

A good tool for this is driver cleaner 3 that you can download on
Go into control panel uninstall all the Nvidia gfx drivers stuff you can see there.

Reboot pc and go into safe mode.

Run drivercleaner (read the instructions and follow them!)

After you removed all the nvidia gfx drivers reboot and as normal. Then in Windows run the setup for your new drivers and let it install as normal.

I have had similar problems trying to upgrade to a new version where it started getting confused with old files still being on the system, driver cleaner fixed it.

Thanks jumping... that did the job. Very good advice, and nice piece of software.
