Problem with Start Up (Or is it Shut Down??) 1

I am having a problem with my computer. When I shut down the computer (click START -> Shut Down), after everything closes up, the screen goes black. I can hear what sounds like the hard drive powering down and off, so that only the fans are running. I never get the screen that says it is okay to shut off my system. After I hear my hard drive power down I shut off the computer with the switch at the back.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, but then when I turn my computer on (using power switch at the back, then the larger power on button on the front of the case) everything starts up but Windows always hangs. I have to shut everything off, restart, then rather than choosing Safe Mode, I choose Normal mode and it starts up fine with no problems.

I'm thinking that I'm not shutting things off properly which is why I'm always hanging the first time I start up, but I don't know what I am doing wrong.

I am running Windows 98. My BIOS is set to have all power management disabled and Windows is set up with everything as "Always On".

If this helps, I have tried using the standby mode in Win98 and it seems to put the system to sleep, but it is harder "waking" it up. I hear a noise - I think the hard drive spinning up, but it never "catches". It's hard to explain, but it's one of those noises that sounds like something isn't quite right, but maybe I'm just not giving it enough time to wake up?

Just as a quick follow-up, if it matters, I have an ECS K7SEM rev 3.0c motherboard.

I personally do this as part of my shut down & power managemment ,
using W98seupg .

During boot up , press Delete & in the Power Management page , make
sure it is set to Disable .

During install , no screensavers are selected . To remove , there
are many ways . One is to Open up Control Panel , select Add/Remove
Programs & click on Windows Setup . Go down to Accessories & click
on details . Untick Screensavers .

While Control Panel is open , click on System , then Device Manager .
Click on the + next to System devices ( down the bottom ) & if Advanced
Power Management support ( or a similar name ) is there , delete it .

I then setup Power Management ( In Control Panel ) the way I like it ,
( Power schemes , Always on . Then set the screen to shut 1st & the power later ) I never have
any problems .

Is yours a custom-made, ErikRP?
Do the LED's on the front of the case work correctly?

My saying so is predicated on a problem I'm gonna' have to take the time to addressing: a new computer I'm almost satisfied is ready for the customer is experiencing the same issue. But, the LED's are amiss, and I'd guess that the polarity of 1 or more of the case to motherboard connectors is 180 out. (mine is XP, tho) Hopefully straightening that out will sort it ALL the way out.

Perhaps it is so with yours.

As an afterthought, BECAUSE you once asked the machine to do the sleepytime thingy, it may have to be reminded again and again (boot to Safe Mode and tell it emphatically) that it's not nice to shut down until you want it to, and then to do so without a whimper. (Don't make me get my belt!) LOL

I know this was posted a little while ago, but if you havent fixed it yet, there is a download from microsoft to correct that problem in windows 98.
